The Terrifics #7
Maybe the most remarkable aspect of The Terrifics is that it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to be special. It just stands out every month as the balm to comics filled with cynicism, despair and death. Every issue writer Jeff Lemire comes up with a way to make me smile and happy this is on my regular reading list.
Lemire starts to pay off the tease from the first issue with half the focus here on Tom Strong. I heard great things about Tom Strong, but never got around to reading his adventures. If Lemire’s take on the character was the norm I definitely need to catch up. The Terrifics might share screen time this issue, but they’re not shafted on quality moments especially with Metamorpho back in his human form. Adding Tom Strong to the mix helped shake up the Terrifics as DC’s Fantastic Four stand-in vibe.
Dale Eaglesham has been doing covers for the book, but this marks his arrival as the ongoing artist. The book has definitely needed a consistent presence to stop the artist musical chairs game and Eaglesham proves why he’s such a smart choice. It’s impressive how quickly Eaglesham has the characters’ body language down. Plastic Man is a lot of physical comedy, Phantom Girl no longer looks 12 and Mr. Terrific carries himself like the leader.
With Eaglesham on board the book feels like the final piece is in place for the title to reach new heights. And with Lemire showing no signs of slowing down on the creativity, The Terrifics continues to live up to its name as one of DC’s most entertaining monthly reads.
