DC Comics reviews for 10/3/18
Justice League #9
Justice League #9 was a character focused issue allowing writer Scott Snyder to spend time with the team without a universe threatening enemy in the way.
Snyder uses some familiar and fresh pairings like Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter, Batman and Superman and Flash and John Stewart. Cyborg was noticeably absent, but it’s possible this story occurs during the events in Justice League Odyssey.
Snyder gives readers a tour of the Hall of Justice and the respective rooms of each member. It’s funny how Snyder has them down so well from Aquaman’s aquatic theme to Batman’s non-welcoming area.
I really liked the subtle touches artist Jorge Jimenez added like the commissary scene with Black Canary finding a present attached to an arrow or The Terrifics encountering Justice League Dark.
Teams have always been so isolated in the DCU until the big crossovers. It’s nice to see a greater sense of community here.
Jimenez is one of my favorite artists right now and his work looks amazing whether it’s Aquaman and Wonder Woman building a chapel or Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter training. Alejandro Sanchez’s colors look fantastic as well.
The only thing that felt off this issue was ironically Snyder’s handling of Batman in his subplot with Superman. It seemed out of character for Batman to summon a dangerous threat to prove a point to Superman.
Beyond that, this issue was definitely needed to allow Snyder time to flesh out the team without distraction.
