Wonder Woman and

Justice League Dark #1

Banking on Justice League’s initial strong success, DC is setting up a monthlong event, The Witching Hour, a mini-crossover through Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark.

Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark #1 picks right up from Justice League Dark #3 where the team is trying to make sense of Wonder Woman’s new abilities. Additionally, Diana is updating her regular Justice League allies about her latest incident.Writer James Tynion IV has a cool idea for this arc and makes the right call in spending time explaining why the Justice League won’t be coming to the rescue. That’s real important as Hecate comes after the women imbued with magical abilities and it wouldn’t make sense for the League not to be involved.

Tynion IV is adding logical layers to Wonder Woman’s backstory, which makes The Witching Hour work so much better than a contrived story linking Diana to magic users.

The team dynamics remain one of the highlights of Justice League Dark. Tynion has made John Constantine a series regular who just hasn’t officially joined the team yet. That works given Constantine’s loner nature.

Jesus Merino handles the art for this oversized issue. Merino drew Wonder Woman regularly so adding new characters wasn’t a major challenge for him. The art looks strong through the issue, which is commendable for an extended special 34 page book.

Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark #1 keeps all the momentum from the main title and kicks off a very intriguing mini crossover that looks to pack some thrills through October.
