James Gunn takes aim at new band of misfits with Suicide Squad II script
When Walt Disney doubled down on its decision to fire James Gunn, it seemed like smart business for Warner Bros. to get him on a DC Films project.
Now it’s official as The Wrap reports Gunn will be writing the script for Suicide Squad II. I figured crafting a Legion of Superheroes would be the ideal fit for Gunn. But turning the lukewarmly received property into a hit for DC would be a bigger deal. Suicide Squad already has some of the ahem bigger guns in the franchise headlined by Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Viola Davis.
Gunn is almost too obvious a choice to be able to make the sequel about a team of misfits work. He’d done wonders with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, but was fired after Disney realized he made offensive tweets back in 2008 and 2009.

According to the reports, Gunn is not writing a true sequel, but a different take on the Suicide Squad. That’s probably for the best as the first film by David Ayer didn’t do the best job of capturing the dynamics of the comic.
Now maybe the next question is will Dave Bautista make good on his threats not to work with Walt Disney again and sign on to Suicide Squad II?
What do you think? Will Gunn be the filmmaker to get the Suicide Squad on the right path?
