DC Comics reviews for 10/10/18
Suicide Squad #47
Rob Williams probably doesn’t get enough credit for his run on Suicide Squad. He’s one of a handful of writers that have stayed on the same title since the start of DC Rebirth. Every other week he’s consistently cranked out entertaining installments of DC’s most dangerous team.
Williams keeps that trend going with a standalone Captain Boomerang issue. This one plays up Boomerang’s past as an Australian secret service agent. Having Boomerang play 007 is a fun twist for the Squad’s comic relief character. Williams even works in a major surprise that will be a welcome development for fans of Captain Boomerang…assuming he actually has some.
Philippe Briones handles the art this issue. For the most part, Briones’ art is solid with some terrific layouts, but the weak point is the occasional flat and elongated faces. Briones doesn’t have that challenge with Boomerang, but with more traditional looking characters, it’s more obvious.
This issue was a reminder that Williams really has a great command of this title and knows exactly how to make the characters shine in any scenario. While it’s not something we need every issue, I’d definitely be up for more of Secret Agent Boomerang adventures in future installments of Suicide Squad.
