Supergirl #23
Supergirl has become a lot more fun with Marc Andreyko writing her new adventures. Andreyko wisely realized having Supergirl stay in lockstep with the TV series wasn’t the best move. He’s given Supergirl a mission that could conceivably keep her occupied for a lengthy amount of time before getting old. After all, it’s not every day Supergirl finds out who ordered the hit on Krypton.
But first, Kara has to convince her pals John Stewart and Kyle Rayner to have the rest of the Green Lanterns Corps back off while she carries out her investigation. I’m really enjoying the quest nature of Kara’s new mission and if these first few issues are any indication, Andreyko won’t struggle for familiar faces to have Supergirl interact with along the way.
Having Kevin Maguire knock out the art doesn’t hurt either. It’s been a while since Maguire has been on a regular book and some of the panels, specifically longer shot ones looked rough at times. When it comes to drawing expressive characters, there’s still nobody better than Maguire and this issue again features some incredible work from the master.
This is Maguire’s last issue for a bit, but the art won’t have a letdown as Doc Shaner is stepping in for the next few issues.
Supergirl has really benefited from the change in creative teams as Andreyko is on to something special and it’s only just beginning. If you’re not reading this book yet, you’re truly missing out on one of the best Supergirl runs in years.
