Titans #27

In a matter of days things have gone pretty terrible for the Titans. Arsenal is dead and Nightwing is clinging for his life after being shot in the head. The Titans are reeling and in desperate need of something positive. Will it arrive in saving their newest meta ally Tyler?

Like last week’s Green Arrow, Titans #27 fully breaks down the Titan’s grieving process and identity crisis. Without Nightwing, is there a point for the team and who will emerge as the leader?

Abnett tackles some major questions in a way that best illustrates the Titans’ bond. They might not have been childhood friends, but they’ve grown closer and are handling their losses in different manners.

Brent Peeples returns as artist for another issue. I’ve liked his previous work on the book in more action-driven issues, but he proves just as capable on slower-paced stories. He captures all the appropriate range of emotions of the broken Titans to sell the drama. Peeples will be handing the art chores over to Clayton Henry, but hopefully he’ll be back at some point.

This is easily the closest Abnett has come to establishing the same bond as the initial incarnation of the Titans.

Abnett provided useful insight on how the team copes and handles loss. By the end of the issue the team is rattled and shaken with few thoughts on how they can turn things around.

Titans continues to show more and more promise each issue. The next few issues look to show Abnett has the right handle on the team now as Titans becomes a stronger read with each installment.
