Wonder Woman #56
DC writers have gotten progressively better at building up to and delivering on mini-epics. The Witching Hour has been another strong example of DC’s stellar track record with a big event contained in a handful of titles. Picking up from Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark #1, the team (and John Constantine) have gotten desperate in their efforts to stop Hecate. Their latest solution has them aligning with an unlikely ally who knows the power Hecate possess.
Writer James Tynion IV knows how to make a fun story and it seems like Justice League Dark is the title he’s stacked up a ton of unique ideas to develop. Besides the surprising ally, Tynion adds in another character fans would expect to show up in a DC magic-based event. There’s also another unexpected cameo from a member of a long forgotten run of the Justice League.
Partnering with Tynion this issue is semi-regular Wonder Woman artist Emanuela Lupacchino and inker Ray McCarthy. Luppachino has delivered some stunning Wonder Woman action over the last year so her return to the title was definitely welcome. That helps give this arc an increased sense of importance to have one of the prominent Wonder Woman artists back. Not surprisingly, Luppachino doesn’t disappoint here besides some inconsistencies with Man-Bat and Swamp Thing’s heights.
The Witching Hour seemed like it was way too quick in the Justice League Dark era for an event, but this has over-delivered in terms of quality, unpredictability and excitement. This has been a fantastic read so far and I’m anxiously anticipating the next installment next week.
