Teen Titans #23

Jarring rough edges for the characters aside, Teen Titans 23 seemed to mark a corner turning moment for the title.
The timing is fortuitous as its brother title Titans is also on the upswing.

Most of this issue centers around the surprising return of Roundhouse and the team’s encounter with the highly skilled assassin Lady Vic.

One of the best aspects of the book is writer Adam Glass doesn’t drag out storylines allowing for easy to follow one and done stories. Glass is utilizing the monthly format in the appropriate manner leading to tight stories that’s showcasing the team dynamic well.

Glass opens up the issue with a shocking scene that immediately grabbed my attention without feeling cheap. It’s nice to see the team starting to come together while the established guard of Robin, Kid Flash and Red Arrow blending well with newcomers Crush, Roundhouse and Djinn.

Artist Bernard Chang provides the break downs while Scott Hanna knocks out the finishes. This setup actually works out fine since most of Chang’s distinctive style carries through.

This issue definitely felt like the kind of story that arrived at the right time for the book. It also helps that Glass introduces a threat that is takes some of the darkness of the Titans and focuses on the villain instead. I’m looking forward to seeing if Glass and Chang can maintain the newfound momentum come next issue.
