Dylan O’Brien gives voice to Bumblebee in Transformers spin-off

I had a massive eye roll when the Bumblebee spin-off movie was announced. Now it’s looking like it could be the best live-action Transformers movie we’ve gotten. Especially with the reveal that Bumblebee will finally talk beyond his radio. Dylan O’Brien will be providing the voice for the character.

Bumblebee producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura chatted with IGN about Bumblebee speaking and why O’Brien (American Assassin) was such a good fit.

‘Dylan has that great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness,’ di Bonaventura said. ‘I think those are the two qualities that we wanted Bumblebee to have…Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice, that’s the simple logic that we employed. The longer term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. And so, that seemed to us to be the appropriate, to get the chance to hear what he sounds like.’

O’Brien was reportedly on the short list to play the Marvel Studios version of Spider-Man. Voicing Bumblebee gives O’Brien an interesting link to Dan Gilvezan, the man who voiced Bumblebee in the original Transformers cartoon. Gilvezan also famously voiced Spider-Man in the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon.

He’ll be joining a cast that also includes Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Kenneth Choi and Angela Basett.

Everything about Bumblebee seems like we’re finally getting a live-action Transformers movie done right. Actually having Bumblebee talk is another step in the right direction. I wouldn’t mind a big drag out finale with Optimus Prime and other Autobots arriving to help Bumblebee fight off the Decepticons.

What do y’all think about this news? Feeling more optimistic about the film?

Bumblebee arrives in theaters on Dec. 21.
