Batman #62

Tom King continues this oddly timed Knightmares arc, which further derails the momentum from an amazing cliffhanger a few issues ago.

Every so often King will get experimental with his writing technique to mixed results. This time, Batman has an inner monologue trying to motivate himself after being caught by Professor Pyg. King writes this one like Batman is hyping himself up and is rattled and discombobulated. It reads like a four or five page idea stretched out over 22 pages. And as much as the premise of this issue feels forced, the writing seems off as well. King has overall had a great command of Batman’s voice, but these occasionally out there issues don’t match up with his regular work.

Like last issue the main saving grace here is the artwork of King’s Mister Miracle collaborator Mitch Gerads. Gerads is such a unique artist and his style works well with this chaotic Batman introspection. It’s just too bad Gerads couldn’t get another Batman story with some real meat to it instead of one that’s largely treading in place.

On the heels of last issue’s randomly thrown in issue, Batman is in the midst of a significant downturn just as the title was getting set for a major story arc.
