DC Comics reviews for 1/9/19
The Green Lantern #3
It’s the second week of January, but odds are pretty good there won’t be a more entertainingly weird comic released in 2019 than The Green Lantern #3. Until maybe The Green Lantern #4.
So yeah, Grant Morrison decides to keep things fairly grounded this issue as Hal Jordan and his Green Lantern pals have to stop a shrunken-down Earth from being auctioned off from a being calling themselves The Savior.
I feel like I’m starting to say this every issue, but Morrison is one of those gifted creators who just gets how to make a fun comic book. He doesn’t handle every character the same way and he’s fully embracing the wide range of possibilities in writing a Green Lantern book. Some of the things that happen or characters say this issue are absurd, but it never stops being incredibly entertaining.
Seriously, at one point Hal declares the population gamma intoxicated and arrests them. Who else could make that up but Morrison?
Liam Sharp isn’t slacking off on his end of the fun as artist either. Sharp seems even more inspired to create fantastic layouts and big larger than life creatures. He’s continuing to refine his storytelling so pages aren’t so challenging to follow, but the pages are so crammed with detail it’s hard not to be impressed. Steve Oliff’s colors are beautiful and make great use of the Lanterns’ main color scheme.
Each issue of The Green Lantern so far has been unpredictable. It’s exactly the only thing comic readers could have expected from a book written by Grant Morrison. Along with The Green Lantern quickly ascending to the top of DC’s must-read pile every month.
