X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer teases the death of a major character

Yes, I’ve been on hurry up and merge with Disney mode for all of Fox’s Marvel properties, but I’m suddenly interested in seeing X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Not because they ditched the X-Men: Apocalypse more colorful comic book costumes, but because one of the greatest anchors in the series might finally be taking a dirt nap.

The new trailer seems to heavily suggest that Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique is going to get killed fairly on by Jean Grey. I’ve always considered Mystique the most unnecessary fixture of these X-Men films. And with Mystique sidelined it looks like more of the film’s focus will be on actual X-Men including Cyclops, Storm, Beast and Nightcrawler. Or maybe it’s a fake out and it’s Quicksilver who gets killed while Mystique is just severely injured? Either way save for X-Men: First Class, these X-Men films seem to bring out the worst of Lawrence’s talent so I’ll be thrilled if she has less screen time.

I’m wondering now if Jessica Chastain’s character isn’t actually Emma Frost aka The White Queen. That would at least pay homage of some sort to The Hellfire Club’s corruption of Jean.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The effects actually look pretty good as well. It seems kinda crazy to be optimistic about a new X-Men film (aliens seeking to weaponize Jean???), but Dark Phoenix looks like it could end this heavily inconsistent series on a strong note. We’ll find out when it hits theaters June 7.
