Looks like the Kree, Skulls and keyboard warriors are no match for Captain Marvel. The Brie Larson-fronted film is docketing towards a mighty $156 million opening.
That’s good enough to rank Captain Marvel as Marvel Studios’ seventh best opening. Captain Marvel trails the three Avengers films, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3.
Of course these numbers are early so the count could be more in line around the $145 million to $155 million range, but with no real competition, expect Captain Marvel to stay in line with earlier estimates.
Captain Marvel rocketed to a blazing $61.4 million opening on Friday.
Early forecasts suggested Captain Marvel could challenge the March opening record holder, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).
Internationally, the film has already brought in $127 million, including $34.3 million from China.
Maybe the biggest question is how well the film will fare in the coming weeks.
Captain Marvel is down to a 79% percent freshness on Rotten Tomatoes. On the audience side, which could be gamed by bad users, it’s at 52 percent.
That could signal a repeat of BvS, which had a massive opening before having significant drops over the following weekends.
