DC Comics reviews for the week of 3/20/19
Batman #67
Tom King seems to write the fifth chapter of Knightmares for critics who accuse him of too much wordy, flowery and at times indulgent writing.
This is a mostly dialogue free issue with little but sound effects to tell the story of Batman chasing after a masked man. Honestly since the Knightmares arc seems to be just treading in place an issue featuring less choppy prose and a fun Chase is a lot more interesting.
For most of the issue it seems like Batman is chasing after Onomatopoeia, but King has a different villain in store. The Green Arrow villain might have made for a nice surprise, but he’s got no personal connection with Batman, which is the point of this arc.
To help keep the action exciting Lee Weeks returns to draw the majority of the issue. Week’s matches up nicely with the style of Batman story King tells. His artwork isn’t the flashiest, but it’s grounded and a fantastic fit for Batman. I think this is the first time Loverne Kindzerski has colored an issue on this run, but it’s impressive work especially considered the need to make the sound effects stand out.
Knightmares remains a slog and a low point of Kong’s run, but at least we got treated to more fantastic work from Weeks.
