DC Comics reviews for the week of 3/20/19
Justice League #20
The Justice League has journeyed to the Sixth Dimension and finds the kind of ideal utopia they’ve always envisioned even if it seems a little too good to be true. The 6th Dimensional JL shows a world where the multiverse is in harmony, Mars has been reborn, Gotham is a bright mecca where Batman is honored, The Flash has mastered the forces and all is well.
This is a taste of the life the regular Justice League could experience if only they are willing to take control of the Multiverse from Perpetua before she has a chance to warp it herself.
Writer Scott Snyder does a good job of setting up this perfect world while teasing that there’s more than meets the eye. We already know not everything is right since Superman has been stranded on a bleak world with no trace of yellow sun. But was the 6th Dimensional Justice League in on it and what new power is Lex Luthor trying to harness now?
Snyder has mostly streamlined the team to feature the Justice League cartoon squad. I wish Mera were a bigger part of this team as it feels like she’s being punished for Aquaman being sidelined after Drowned Earth. Starman is an interesting addition to the cast, but like Mera, feels underutilized.
Jorge Jimenez’s art continues to look amazing. He’s such a fantastic artist and he’s able to conceive this idealistic world he and Snyder plotted with no trouble. From the character designs of the 6D Justice League to his take on Mister Mxyzptlk, this is some incredible art. Alejandro Sanchez’s colors are also sensational with bright choices to further sell this paradise.
This arc isn’t going to be a lengthy one as the League starts to learn the truth of this utopia while Superman gets greater insight as to who put him in this trap. Thankfully Justice League remains one of the five DC titles that continues its bi-monthly release schedule so we won’t have to wait long for what should be an electric conclusion.
