DC comics reviews for 4/17/19
Naomi #4
Out of all the books Brian Michael Bendis writes since joining DC, Naomi is running neck and neck with Action Comics as my favorite. Bendis’ collaboration with co-writer David F. Walker has resulted in a immensely fun and engaging mystery.
In this issue, Naomi starts to learn the truth of her past. But first, she learns the shocking origin of her father and his parents’ connection to the mysterious Dee. It’s a fascinating rollout of a new character and Walker and Bendis set the narrative through a number of twists to keep readers from correctly guessing where the story is headed.
As thrilling as the story is, it wouldn’t be nearly as engaging without the sensational art from Jamal Campbell, who injects so much character and emotion into standard conversations. It’s no shock then how electric his pages look during action sequences. Naomi would be a solid book in other hands, but Campbell gives it that little something extra to truly be special.
Mark Millar is crafting a series of new comics with Netflix with a goal being to create original new content for the streaming service. Naomi might not be an obvious candidate for a blockbuster film, but I could easily see this becoming an addictive TV series on the DC streaming service, DC Universe. It’s got all the ingredients of a potential hit beyond the comic book pages. Until then, I’ll happy appreciate getting more breadcrumbs revealed each month as more of the mystery unfolds.
