Nightwing #59
Dan Jurgens is making it real hard to wait for the return of the old Nightwing status quo. There’s so many potential storylines and character development to come out of the five Nightwing and Jurgens shows he’s just getting started.
This issue he dives deeper into the backstory of Hutch, the fire department member of the squad. Jurgens smartly starts off this feature connecting Hutch with Ric.
Chris Mooneyham returns to tackle the art this issue. I haven’t been the biggest fan of Mooneyham’s art at times as it’s appeared a little rough. That’s not the case this issue as the break appeared to do him well. His pages look crisp and his characters are very expressive. Nick Filardi’s colors are sharp and further bring out the details of Mooneyham’s art.
A new villain is introduced this issue and while he hardly seems like he’ll be a long-term player, he’s the ideal kind of adversary for this neophyte team.
Nightwing continues to be a low-key strong title. It’s not getting the fanfare of other books, but it’s consistently delivering a solid and surprisingly fun twist on one of DC’s most beloved characters.
