Twenty three years after making Sports Illustrated history, Tyra Banks is back on the cover of the 2019 Swimsuit edition. Banks was the first black woman to appear on her own on the SI Swimsuit Issue cover. Banks’ legacy continues as last year Danielle Herrington was the SI Swimsuit edition cover star and the third black woman to appear on the cover.
During an appearance on Good Morning America, Banks revealed her cover and said “My first one was 23 years ago, how crazy is that? I’m like damn — I’m 45 dog!”
Banks debuted in SI Swimsuit back in 1993. Crazily it was another three years before she returned on the cover with Valeria Mazza. In 1997, Banks didn’t have to share the spotlight with her history making cover from her photoshoot in Harbour Island, Bahamas with an iconic polka dot bikini.

“Tyra Banks is the epitome of what we hope for all the women who are a part of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit,” editor MJ Day said in an interview with SI. “What she has achieved so far in her career is extraordinary. She has parlayed a modeling career into phenomenal success that spans multiple industries and resonates with people on a global scale. She has refused to be singularly defined and is constantly working to inspire everyone within her reach.”
