Avengers: Endgame withstood a fierce challenge from Pokemon: Detective Pikachu to retain the box office crown for a third week, but it wasn’t easy.
Endgame’s third weekend brought in $63 million. That’s good enough to take its domestic total to $723 million passing fellow Marvel Studios film Black Panther ($700 million). By this time next week, Endgame should have racked up the $38 million necessary to overtake Avatar ($760 million) for the second highest grossing slot on the domestic all-time list. Endgame might not have enough steam to beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6 million).
Worldwide, Endgame has already captured the No. 2 spot as it closes in on Avatar ($2.78 billion). Currently, Endgame has $2.48 billion so it could be pretty close.
Pikachu had the best opening for a video game adaptation with $58 million easily topping the 2001 mark of Lara Croft Tomb Raider ($47.7 million). This should fare pretty well over the next few weeks as it received the covered A- CinemaScore. Without a ton of good family options out there, Det. Pikachu should be a major player and could easily cross the $150 million mark.

In third place was The Hustle, the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. That brought in $13.5 million. The Intruder added another $6.6 million to take its two week total to $20 million. That doesn’t sound like much, but considering the film’s $8 million budget this is a solid hit for distributor Screen Gems.
Long Shot wrapped the Top 5 with $6.1 million taking its total after two weeks to $19.7 million.
