DC Comics reviews for the week of 5/22/19
Action Comics #1011
Rise of Leviathan hasn’t disappointed yet. It’s the kind of long form story arc Brian Michael Bendis can sink his writing chops in without suffering from slow pacing.
It’s basically a spy thriller involving superheroes. Superman isn’t the best suited character for this kind of deep cover operation, which makes the story even more fascinating. You can imagine how Batman or Nightwing would function, but Superman has to rely on his journalistic skills as much as his powers.
Bendis is also giving a greater spotlight to Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, who needed this attention to remind readers why they’re such endearing characters.
The whole Leviathan mystery with these shadowy operatives working behind the scenes slowly manipulating events and no who is running Leviathan.
Artist Steve Epting is well-suited for this clandestine tone. He utilizes shadows and corners effectively and adds the right amount of darkness to the story, which is further enhanced by Brad Anderson’s captivating colors.
This storyline is in its fifth chapter, but it hasn’t felt like it’s treading water and remains just as intense and captivating as it did with the first issue.
