Aladdin has magical opening as Avengers: Endgame joins the $800M club
Aladdin takes the box office for a ride this weekend with an impressive $85 million opening for the weekend and should crack $100 million for the Memorial Day holiday.
After the dismal showing of Dumbo with a weak $45 million opening earlier this year, Aladdin is a strong comeback for Disney and the fourth highest opening weekend for its live-action adaptations. If the film beats expectations, Aladdin could beat out The Jungle Book ($103 million) and possibly Alice in Wonderland ($116 million).
With an estimated $183 million budget, Aladdin stands a good shot at making back its budget on the domestic side alone. Worldwide, the film brought in another $121 million taking its total to $210 million. This is the second best opening weekend in Will Smith’s career, trailing only Suicide Squad ($133 million).

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum added another $24 million to its total, which took it over the $100 million mark in just its second week. That already makes Parabellum the highest grossing entry in the series.
Avengers: Endgame added $16.8 million. That’s good enough for $798 million and by Monday it will cross the vaunted $800 million club. Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens has crossed the $800 million mark.
Worldwide, Endgame is now $111 million behind Avatar ($2.78 billion) for the top spot. It’s going to be close at this point, but you’ve gotta imagine Disney will re-release Endgame in theaters during the Christmas holiday season if it’s just a few million away. A secondary surge could be all it needs to reach the finish line.
Rounding out the Top 5 are Pokemon: Detective Pikachu with $13.3 million ($116 million) and newcomer Brightburn with $7.5 million.
