DC Comics reviews for 6/5/19 – Justice League #25, Batman #72
Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #2
Good luck trying not to get caught up in this inspired crossover. The previous two team-ups between Batman and the TMNT have been a lot of fun with both groups crossover into the other’s sandbox. For this series, writer James Tynion IV merges them in a clever hybrid of both the Golden Age eras of the characters. And the only one who knows the truth is a universe hopping Raphael.
That means origin time and Tynion puts a clever spin on it going back to the Turtles’ earliest days complete with a black and white flashback segment. Making the flashbacks even more fun is the fact that Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman contributed the art for those scenes.
Learning the origins of this hybrid universe where Batman and the Turtles grew up as brothers was a lot of fun as well. Freddie E. Williams II has been DC’s go to artist for these property crossover events for a reason as he knows how to blend two universes with ease and make them all larger than life. Jeremy Colwell’s colors are equally bombastic and epic.
I love the entire idea of this series right down to the surprise villain which is a hybrid of two characters fans would probably never see coming. This is such a fun series and another great example of DC continuing to explore fun crossover possibilities with its universe.
