DC Comics reviews for 6/5/19 – Justice League #25, Batman #72

Justice League #25

justice league #25

Yeah, we all know Scott Snyder can write one heck of a Batman book. His run was filled with a slew of iconic Dark Knight moments, but what about the other heroes in the Justice League namely Superman? This double sized issue puts all those fears to rest with a beautiful Superman moment that wonderfully captures everything great about the Rebirth era Big Blue.

I love Snyder’s takes on the characters and almost wish for a cool down issue so he could spend more time fleshing out these various relationships and establish them further. The Flash, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl still feel somewhat under served and Mera and Starman rarely get much of a showcase at all. Hopefully Mera will have a more prominent role as the year rolls out. This issue marks Jorge Jimenez’s last one for the time being. Jimenez infused such life and energy into this new era of the JL and his pages are going to be missed.

Wrapping the battle against The Forager in The Sixth Dimension isn’t the only concern for the League in this issue however.

James Tynion IV writes the follow-up chapter where the League learns of Lex Luthor’s offer to the world and his encouragement for them to indulge their darkest desires to kick off the Year of the Villain. With Luthor signaling his call to arms, the League has to decide on one of three options to best turn the tide, but what if none of them can work? New regular artist Javier Fernandez handles this portion of the story.

Fernandez has done some high quality work on books like Nightwing and Green Arrow. His take on the League is interesting and more stylized with harsher, more realistic line work than Jimenez. Considering the shift in tone for Justice League with YOTV, Fernandez could make for a very effective fit.

With City of Bane, Event Leviathan and Year of the Villain, DC has a trio of very intriguing and exciting summer events in the works. It’ll be interesting to see which one emerges as the highlight of the summer and how the various events will connect. If nothing else, YOTV looks like it’s going to be a very fun storyline to see play out.
