It was an underwhelming weekend at the box office as both big new arrivals failed to meet expectations.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 earned the top spot with $47 million. That’s way off from the $103.4 million the original brought in back in 2016. Still, it should easily make back its $80 million budget.
Dark Phoenix didn’t fare as well with a $33 million opening. That’s by far the worst debut for any X-Men film beating the previous low mark of $55 million set by The Wolverine.
This is the final installment of this incarnation of the X-Men from Fox and looks like it will end the series with a whimper.
We should probably expect a little delay before the first Marvel Studios take on Marvel’s mutants to let the bad taste of these last few films fade from audience’s memories.
In third place was Aladdin, which added another $24.5 million to its total taking its three week gross to $232.2 million. That easily recoups its $183 million budget.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters had a rough second week falling to $15.5 million. It’s going to be an uphill battle to make its $170 million budget back if it had to rely on the domestic gross.
Worldwide the film has had a far more monstrous performance with an impressive $213 million total to take its worldwide tally to $292 million.
Rocketman wraps the Top 5 with another $14 million to being its two week total to $50 million. That makes back its $40 million budget.
Avengers: Endgame nabbed another $4.8 million to take its domestic total to $824 million. Worldwide it’s now $53 million behind Avatar on the all time chart.
