Hot Toys Black Panther figure review – the new king of the display

Black Panther was such an amazing cinematic experience for me and showed how far the Marvel Studios and comic book genre has come over the years. It was one of those cases where I knew I was going to be in major trouble when Hot Toys started cranking out figures from the film.

When I got the Hot Toys Captain America: Civil War Black Panther, I really didn’t expect to get another Black Panther figure, but this is a tremendous upgrade over the original in more ways than one. Apologies in advance for the onslaught of pictures. I ended up taking a ton and this was my weak attempt at some iota of restraint.

Packaging:  You can always tell when Hot Toys is feeling inspired by their level of creativity with the packaging. This one really stands out among my favorite. It’s got the side portrait like the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 packaging with embossed purple foil slash marks.

Basically, this is an awesome 90s comic book cover. The packaging also notes the special LED lighting unit which is key for one of the main features.

Likeness:  I really like the newer Black Panther costume as the mask/helmet has more of a panther-like vibe. It’s so hard to truly appreciate all of the design work that went into this costume until you see the figure. There’s so much ornate detail you don’t have time to take in during an action movie.

The big plus for this figure is the inclusion of the Chadwick Boseman head sculpt. I figured that’s what Hot Toys was doing when the Civil War figure didn’t have an alternate head. I keep thinking the head might be a smidge too small, but it’s actually the head sits too deep into the neck peg and that reduces just enough of the neck portion to look off.

It looks exactly how Boseman looks in the film. This is another one where you know exactly who it is even without seeing the rest of the figure. My wife didn’t think this one scored as high on the likeness factor, but I’m not seeing it. Maybe the hair texturing isn’t as detailed as it could be, but I’m a fan.

MORE:

Scale:  It seems like Hot Toys went with a slighter body for this version as the Civil War figure was a bit broader in the chest and shoulders area. This figure is more streamlined than the earlier figure and it’s more fitting for Black Panther.

Paint: The Boseman sculpt features all of Hot Toys’ acclaimed real life paint applications with variations to the skin tone and great work with the facial hair. The eyes have that way too real look, which still keeps Hot Toys above its competitors in this scale.

Uniform:  As you might expect, Hot Toys covers all of the updates to the original suit in spectacular detail. Again, the layers of this uniform are amazing. The outfit isn’t just a basic black besides the silver elements and it reflects the character’s African heritage. The inlay of the necklace and silver design elements are very well done also.

As far as the fit, the thinner material allows for easier posing, but it does still bunch up in the waist/crotch area. I think that’s just unavoidable with this material.

Articulation: I’m only so bold with posing my Hot Toys figures as I’m convinced the proto photographers aren’t worried about breaking the figure after testing the articulation limits.

That said, I did try and max out the possible poses while paying close attention to the articulation limits in the instructions.

I was able to get some pretty fun poses out of him even if the iconic Wakanda Forever was asking too much.

Accessories:  With any Hot Toys figure you’re going to get a nice array of hands.

This one comes with a pair of fists, clenching hands, clenching hands with outstretched claws and a right hand for holding the spear.

Additionally, Black Panther has two interchangeable masked head pieces so you can have his eyes showing or the fully covered look. It’s pretty easy to swap out and is another way to differentiate this one from the Civil War figure.  Just make sure to use the included lever to easily pull out and swap the eye pieces.

He also comes with a spear, which I don’t quite remember when he used this in the film.

This is not just an excuse to watch it again…OK you saw through me.

Of course he’s got a Black Panther stand. This one is more useful than the standard one as it’s also the base for the UV display stand. This stand is really cool as it looks like something you’d find in Wakanda with the pattern.

The light stand main pieces are set in Styrofoam with a decorative wrap.

It’s certainly not an elaborate piece, but it doesn’t look cheap once it’s together. Plus, Hot Toys kept the price down for a light-up feature, which I appreciate.

Once you put the backdrop in it all lights up as well.

The luminous effect works as advertised, even in regular light.

But when you throw in low light, the effect really looks cool. That’s the kind of ingenuity that makes a Hot Toys figure worth the price.

Worth it?  Hot Toys is charging more for this one as he goes for $259. I say more as he is more expensive than the typical $220 figure, but is a far better value than the Avengers: Infinity War Captain America, which was only $8 cheaper.

Rating: 10 out of 10

I was really looking forward to this figure and it still blew away my expectations thanks to the outfit details, the poseability and the light-up feature. I expect this one to be high in my Figure of the Year list for 2019.

Where to get it?  Black Panther is listed as pre-order at sideshowcollectibles.com. He was a Day 1 pre-order for me and I got him a few weeks ago. I assume other folks will start getting their pre-orders filled shortly.  He’s definitely going to be a popular figure since this outfit works for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame displays.
