DC Comics reviews for 6/19/19 – Superman Year One #1
Aquaman #49
Aquaman is getting more intriguing as Arthur Curry begins to regain his memory. He’s at the halfway point now and Mother Shark warns him learning more could prove disastrous.
But with the nagging memory of the mysterious redhead, Arthur wants to know everything.
There’s not a lot of action this issue, but writer Kelly Sue DeConnick does some terrific character development spotlighting Arthur and Mera’s relationship.
That’s at the heart of most of the best Aquaman stories and I’ve been awaiting DeConnick’s take on one of DC’s best pairings. It didn’t disappoint. DeConnick fills in some gaps with the end of Justice League: Drowned Earth and the start of her run, which was more helpful than I imagined.
Viktor Bogdanovic seems to have found a great fit for his art style. I really like his take on Arthur and Mera and he’s always been a strong artist handling action scenes. Sunny Gho’s color work is exquisite with some pleasant warm tones for the flashback sequences and darker hues for the Mother Shark scenes.
Aquaman is definitely on the rise and with Arthur knowing the full nature of his memory the title looks to get only more interesting over the next few months.
