Melissa Benoist ditches the skirt for more adult Supergirl outfit for Season 5
I’ve always liked the Supergirl costume on the CW series, but after four seasons in a skirt, Melissa Benoist said she was ready for a change.
In a new interview with EW, Benoist described the wardrobe switch as a more practical way to portray the character.
“We’ve been talking about pants since season 1. Every time a writer from the show has come up, and it’s freezing cold in Vancouver, I’m like, ‘Guys, please can I not wear tights?’” I love [Kara’s old costume]. I haven’t changed it because it so works, and I think it is very Kara. I’ve always felt that — until recently, I’m like, ‘Something’s gotta give.’”
Benoist said the new attire represents her overall goal for Supergirl to be more mature.
“I just think it’s more adult. Part of my goal in this whole series for whenever the show ends, I just want there to be a very clear arc for this character that she evolved as a woman and found her femininity and her adulthood, just a self-discovery.”
The title of the character somewhat betrays that though and with this new look, maybe it’s time for the show to be renamed Superwoman? I know early on the writers had Cat Grant fumble through an explanation, but with the more feminist-focused slant on the show calling a woman Supergirl seems somewhat backwards.
Maybe this is the dude writer in me, but did wearing a skirt somehow prevent Kara from finding her femininity and does this also mean Lena Luthor will start wearing pant suits next season?

I’m not sure how ditching the skirt will help with the action scenes as the more melee battles have always looked like Benoist was suspended on wires without a more fluid sense of movement like we see in most comic book films.
What do you think of the new look and are you excited about Supergirl returning in Oct. 6 as part of the World’s Finest block with Batwoman?
