DC Comics reviews for 7/17/19 – Batman #75, Aquaman #50
Nightwing #62
Dan Jurgens has been able to keep the steam going of the four Nightwings plus the original flavor longer than anyone would imagine, but now it’s starting to seem like the time is right to start moving in that direction at least.
I think the culprit is there’s so many issues where the four new Nightwings are amazed at Ric, who continues thinking about his memory loss and wanting to start fresh while still being a vigilante. Jurgens is going to need to start focusing more on the four newbies or continuing to evolve Ric’s status quo like he does in this issue with a big change from Dick Grayson’s mentality. That’s a welcome start, but the four Nightwings still feel like too much of a blank slate to keep in the spotlight once Ric began helping people in a makeshift costume. I wonder if it wouldn’t have been better if Ric just watched from the sidelines while they carried on in Nightwing’s honor as they are starting to fade into the background now.
Ronan Cliquet’s art is solid. Cliquet’s pages are always decent and he’s a good storyteller, but he doesn’t have anything exciting to work with this issue. It seems like every artist puts a different spin on Ric’s appearance and Cliquet is the first to give him more of a costume. It’ll be interesting to see if Ric eventually takes on a new costume as an official member of the Nightwing squad or establishes a different identity.
There’s nothing noticeably bad about this issue, but it’s the first in a while that makes me wonder how long the new Nightwings arc can last. Under the current setup, I’d say not that much longer, but maybe Jurgens has some tricks to reinvigorate this creative decision once again?
