DC Comics reviews for 7/24/19 – Wonder Woman #75, The Flash #75
Action Comics #1013
Brian Michael Bendis keeps rolling along with this Event Leviathan tie-in book. DC is in this weird position of having three semi-major events occurring at the same time, but so far they’ve connected with each other in a smooth, organic fashion. While the focus on Action Comics is the Leviathan storyline, there’s a Year of the Villain crossover this issue. Superman returns to aid Thorne and might have cracked a major piece of the Leviathan mystery while Goode makes her own discoveries. It’s nice to see Perry White more prominently featured in all of his gruff editor-in-chief glory.
Szymon Kudranski’s art is terrific with the exception of his take on Superman as his gritty, realistic style doesn’t work as well on the larger than life hero. Brad Anderson’s colors do a stellar job of bringing out Kudranski’s detailed pages. Whenever Bendis decides he’s ready to tackle The Question as a regular series, this would be an ideal art team for that collaboration.
Action Comics worked in more low-key fight scenes this issue, but Lex Luthor’s offer to a regular supporting character ensures that’s about to become a big focus over the next few installments. Action delivers once again with outstanding characterization making for an ideal companion piece to Event Leviathan.
