Now that we’re halfway through this 12-issue maxi-series it’s clear writer Robert Venditti has too many ideas to wrap the title now.

The pacing hasn’t felt slow or drawn out, yet it feels like he’s just getting started. Issue 7 plays out like a bottle episode where the team licks their wounds after encountering Overman at a resistance sympathizer’s house. Venditti has managed to keep that constantly on the run tone throughout where the FF can’t ever feel too safe. That’s what makes the book so unique — while the team has incredible power, it’s still just a handful of heroes against a world corrupted by evil. And there’s something terrifying about heroes in the role of Jews trying to stay hidden from the Nazis despite their abilities.

Eddy Barrows misses his first issue as the series artist, but Bruno Redondo proves more than capable as he maintains the book’s strong visual presentation. Redondo captures the creepy presence of the Plasstic Men and the exasperation of the team as they consider their next move.

The issue does make good on its promise to reveal a traitor in the midst though thankfully not in the way you might expect. Freedom Fighters keeps delivering each month and the only real question now is can DC let it go on beyond its original 12-issue deal?
