DC Comics reviews for 7/24/19 – Wonder Woman #75, The Flash #75

The Flash #75

the flash #75

The Flash is always going to be in good hands so long as Joshua Williamson is writing it. If we needed another example that was clear with this milestone issue of a book Williamson has written without missing an issue since the start of DC Rebirth.

In this issue, Barry has his first/final battle with The Turtle for control over time. Turtle plans to leech Flash’s speed to slow the Multiverse down to a pace more to his liking.

While his future self warns against it, Barry decides to fight anyway emboldened by an emotion stronger than fear — hope. This is one of those instances where Williamson’s deep appreciation for The Flash’s history comes full circle with this big shout out to Flash’s tenure as a Blue Lantern during Blackest Night.

The Turtle makes a good initial villain for Flash as he’s threatening without being an impossible challenge for a rookie hero to beat. Williamson throws in some nice nods to other established Flash traits like his knack for corny jokes.

Howard Porter draws the main chapter wrapping an arc he’s delivered consistently amazing art for in strong fashion. He’s been a vital part of making this Year One story work so well.

As DC still tries to make sense of the pre-Flashpoint continuity, Williamson offers a solution for The Flash history in a way that neatly ties everything together.

But that’s not all. Williamson adds two chapters — one drawn by Scott Kollins with an eye to the imminent future of The Flash and the other penciled by Christian Duce that returns to prominence one of Flash’s main villains as he responds to Lex Luthor’s offer for Year of the Villain.

The Flash #75 was a great milestone issue that shows there’s plenty of mileage left yet in Williamson’s run.
