Wonder Woman #75

wonder woman 75

For this big milestone issue, writer G. Willow Wilson finally reunites Wonder Woman with the Amazons, but it’s not going to be easy.

I appreciate the efforts of the Wonder Woman writers to establish a new major adversary for her as there’s only so many times Diana can face off against Cheetah, Giganta and Ares. I’ll avoid spoiling who has been behind Wonder Woman’s latest challenge, but they’re slowly rising in prominence and becoming a force. Still, Wilson doesn’t truly give the adversary their big moment as the driving force of this storyline so the confrontation and the resolution feels somewhat flat.

Wilson sets up an interesting angle of Amazons battling each other, but the story is so focused on the established characters that what should be a very big deal seems smaller than a clash of this nature should dictate.

Wilson has a strong lineup of artists joining her this issue including some of the book’s regulars Xermanico, Jesus Merino and Vicente Cifuentes. The art responsibilities are divvied up somewhat randomly as one artist will handle 10 pages, and then do four more throughout the issue. Fortunately their styles mesh well enough that it’s not all that distracting.

I’m excited to see where Wilson will take the title now with Diana reunited with the Amazons. That’s been a core component of the character and was definitely missed. The Year of the Villain tie-in sets up what could be an interesting story although it again speaks to the need for a deeper Rogues Gallery for Wonder Woman.
