DC Comics reviews 8/7/19 – Batman #76, Justice League #29

Batman #76

batman #76

Tom King seems to have his mojo back as Batman #76 was another thrilling chapter of City of Bane.

One hero tries to break the law to free Gotham from the state of terror under Bane and runs into one of the city’s protectors, Gotham Girl. King is on the verge of spamming her out, but he set up a smart safeguard with her power killing her every time she uses it. Otherwise he’d have an unbeatable character Batman has no shot at stopping.

It’s nice to see not everyone is taking Bane’s rule lying down as two of Batman’s allies observe the situation and start coming up with a countermeasure. Meanwhile Flashpoint Batman keeps going after criminals who refused to submit to Bane including a King favorite. Heck no.

Tony S. Daniel’s pencils are as gorgeous as ever. It’s probably a toss-up between Daniel and Mikel Janin as far as the most compatible with King’s storytelling style and it’s a nice problem for the book to have with two top tier artists on it. Tomeu Morey’s colors are always so piercingly vivid breaking up the darkness of Gotham.

While King seemed ago drag out other storylines the pacing on City of Bane so far has been on point as he gives just enough information to keep readers hooked as he unfolds what’s so far been an epic finale to his Batman run.
