DC Comics reviews 8/7/19 – Batman #76, Justice League #29
DCeased #4
Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine are not playing around with DCeased. This is the first event in years absolutely making good on the promise that no one is safe.
This issue finds the surging heroes gathering and preparing to strike back. But the odds don’t look great when the infected include a certain skyscraper size giant and the deadliest man on Earth. Can the heroes do anything more than watch the world burn?
This series has been so effective because Taylor isn’t wallowing in despair. The deaths and infected are shocking but the heroes are portrayed every bit as resilient and poised to turn the tide. This issue ends with a bit of a gut punch to that notion, but Taylor’s script clearly has the long game in mind. And his portrayal of the various characters in the DCU feels so spot on.

Hairsine’s art continues to be a small revelation. His decidedly non-heroic, realistic portrayal of the heroes gives them a more relatable sense of humanity regardless of their clothing. It makes their spectacular efforts look that much more impressive. Rain Beredo’s colors have just the right amount of faded, washed out appearance to provide a bleak and increasingly hopeless tone.
DCeased has been a phenomenal read every issue and it’s exceeded my expectations on this style of Else world’s
event. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next issue especially after this final page.
