DC Comics reviews 8/7/19 – Batman #76, Justice League #29
Sinestro Year of the Villain #1
It was a smart move kicking off the Year of the Villain one shots with Sinestro. As one of Lex Luthor’s Legion of Doom lieutenants, Sinestro has a vested interest in making sure Luthor’s plans play out smoothly.
Writer Mark Russell sends Sinestro on a mission to stop a group of planet killers from destroying worlds key to Luthor’s operations. After repeated failures, Sinestro cracks the puzzle by getting the planet killers’ working class to look inward for a few precious seconds.
Sinestro is a calculating tactician and he’s not concerned with losing battles when winning the war is within his grasp.Russell brings a more introspective take on Sinestro than we’ve seen lately and it works very well with this story.
Yildiary Cinar handles the artwork for this special. Cinar’s art isn’t groundbreaking and tends to ignore Sinestro’s more exaggerated features, but his pages are easy to follow and the layouts are smooth.
It’ll be interesting to see how these YOTV one-shots play out and if they’ll have more depth than a basic standalone that truly connects to the main story. I imagine the quality of the stories will be inconsistent but at least Sinestro got things off on the right foot.
