DC Comics reviews 8/21/19 – Batman #77, Superman Year One #2

Nightwing #63

Dan Jurgens is closing in on the point where the five Nightwings arc has to go to another level in order to keep it interesting.

It doesn’t help the the issues are starting to play out too similar with a small scale case as Ric Grayson reintroduces readers to the four replacement Nightwings and their backstory.

This issue largely sticks to the status quo besides Jurgens introducing the notion of one of the group attempting to befriend Ric. I think switching up the perspective away from Ric would be a bigger help to make him more mysterious.

Things get a little more interesting with the arrival of one of Nightwing’s bigger enemies, Talon, who’s come to Bludhaven to take out the Nightwing imposters. Killing off characters isn’t the best way to sell drama, but Jurgens might have to go that route to show this is serious business and possibly prompt Ric to become Nightwing full time again.

Filling in as the artist this issue is Ronan Cliquet. Cliquet’s work is adequate but it lacks the flash or level of detail to really convey the increasing grittiness and darkness of Bludhaven.

Nightwing is missing a spark these days. Hopefully, Jurgens can get the book back on track soon as his run with these four Nightwings has been better than I expected. He just needs something to continue validating the title as a group book instead of Batman’s protege handling crime on his own.
