DC Comics reviews 8/21/19 – Batman #77, Superman Year One #2
Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #2
It took all of two issues, but Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen is one of my favorite comics right now. It’s just a fun and good-natured book that immediately reminds readers why Jimmy Olsen has been one of the more endearing and enduring supporting characters in all of comics.
Matt Fraction has a smart approach for the book writing it in mini chapters like a classic Archie digest. These bite sized chapters read like standalone stories, but play into the overall narrative. All of the chapters are entertaining, but my favorite was easily the one with Jimmy hanging out with Superman. It’s kinda become cliche that Jimmy is Superman’s pal, but Fraction actually takes the time to show why Superman finds Jimmy such a cool friend who deserves more credit and respect than he gets. Superman can fall into light brooding too often so it was really fun watching him goof off a little with his buddy.
Steve Lieber’s art is so perfectly suited for this title as well with its playful, inviting style. Fraction hasn’t been able to come up with anything that Lieber can’t make look incredible and there’s little reason to think that will happen anytime soon. Colorist Nathan Fairbairn keeps the lighthearted mood thriving with cheery and bright colors. This isn’t the best illustrated book on the market, but no other art team could do a better job with this title.
DC has a massive winner with this book and it’s already going to be a long wait till the next issue. I’m a big fan of this one and highly recommend checking it out.
