DC Comics reviews 9/18/19 – Justice League #32, Batman #79
Aquaman #52
Team Aquaman battles a sea monster while Black Manta begins his latest scheme.
Sea monsters definitely aren’t a new threat for Aquaman, but writer Kelly Sue DeConnick gives the story some much needed consequences.
Aqualad has been a welcome addition to the cast and his banter with Aquaman is a highlight of the issue.
This definitely isn’t to single DeConnick out as this is her first issue trying the gimmick, but some DC writers are leaning too heavily on acclaimed literary works to add another layer of depth to their stories. It hasn’t really worked well as of late, including this issue, and instead feels like a forced way to showcase the writer’s prose smarts.
Robson Rocha’s art continues to improve each issue. There’s a real vibe that Rocha has now taken a sense of ownership on the title and is knocking out some of his best work consistently. Sunny Gho utilizes bright colors while washing them out so it’s not so vibrant.
Aquaman seems ready to start establishing itself as a player in the DCU again. The creative team is in place and now it’s time for them to make good on the promise they’ve started they season with now.
