DC Comics reviews 9/18/19 – Justice League #32, Batman #79
Lex Luthor Year of the Villain #1
As arguably the main villain of DC’s Year of the Villain (Batman fans might have other thoughts), Lex Luthor’s YOTV one-shot was easily one of the most anticipated. But as has disappointingly been the case for many of these one-shots, there wasn’t enough substance here to warrant a side story.
In part that’s due to the fantastic work Justice League writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV have put in to fleshing out their take on Luthor. There’s not a lot of fresh ground writer Jason Latour can explore as a result.
Latour gives it a commendable effort with a storyline of Apex Luthor travels through the Multiverse encountering various Luthors who failed to reach their potential.
It’s a weird detour for a character that has his hands full with the Justice League and advancing Perpetua’s agenda. It’s clear DC editors had big hopes for this one as Bryan Hitch was assigned as the artist for this issue. Hitch brings his epic blockbuster scale art through the journey through the Multiverse in the same way he did on Hawkman so the book looks great.
This isn’t the strongest spin-off and isn’t essential reading for only the most die-hard Luthor fan.
