Wonder Woman #79
I’m still not overly thrilled G. Willow Wilson’s Wonder Woman run is coming to an end. She’s had some unique ideas for Wonder Woman and her allies and enemies that’s given the title a different feel than some previous runs. I was looking to seeing where she would continue to take them on an extended run.
For now it’s just about wrapped as the love is gone…literally with Aphrodite’s murder. Cheetah is reveling in the apathy and fear and coming to finish the job she started against Diana. It comes down to an unexpected ally whose timely arrival gives her a fighting chance while Maggie tries to rally help of a different kind.
Scot Eaton handles the art this issue. Eaton is one of those super reliable fill-in artist who’s able to come in and provide baseline visual continuity. His work isn’t the flashiest, but he’s a more than competent storyteller who makes smart choices with perspective and action sequences.
Wilson also follows up on a subplot she’s been building up for a while now. It’s still a little surprising to see play out, but it makes sense in the grand scheme of this arc. Whenever a writer is preparing to leave a book there’s a sense of lame duck status with nothing having any real significance. Wilson is laying a foundation for her successor that could lead to some interesting directions or be ignored. Either way she’s delivering a compelling story on her way out.
