DC Comics reviews 9/25/19 – Batman/Superman #2, Detective Comics #1012

One of the best early aspects of Batman/Superman is that writer Joshua Williamson isn’t just playing the World’s Finest’s Greatest Hits. Batman and Superman aren’t bickering throughout nor going on about their differences. Williamson writes the two as respected peers and friends who can speak to each other on a level that few others can.

This finds the two learning of The Batman Who Laughs’ plan to infect other heroes with the special dark matter Nth metal batarangs. DC has already revealed the identities of The Secret Six, which is always a curious move as the readers are that much further ahead than the characters. Commissioner Gordon, who we knew was infected at the start of the series, is cautiously operating behind the scenes carrying out TBWL’s plan.

Batman and Superman can’t get too preoccupied as they have to tangle with TBWL’s first agent – Shazam. This battle plays out differently than previous Superman/Shazam clashes and Williamson certainly gives it a fresh (ahem) spark. The final gambit proves just how desperate Batman and Superman are as they attempt to stop TBWL’s agenda in the most direct way possible.

Artist David Marquez is delivering some gorgeous pages with breathtaking visuals of the characters. Marquez has a classic, streamlined presentation that works very well here. Colorist Alejandro Sanchez is a great partner for this book as he doesn’t need an overwhelming color palette to sell the story.

Batman/Superman has lived up to the hype so far and has been an exceptional story as DC continues building up The Infected event.
