Freedom Fighters #9

Freedom Fighters continues to be a book full of surprises. Just when it seems like writer Robert Venditti is setting things up in one direction, he takes a drastic switch yet constantly keeps the book entertaining.

The team is splintered with Black Condor leading a riot in Detroit against the Plasstic Men and Nazi troops. Meanwhile Human Bomb continues to resist Hitler III’s torture while Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady and Cache can only listen in on the radio before striking with their final desperate gambit.

My only complaint is we’re approaching the home stretch of the run with only three more issues left. This is a book that really warrants getting an extended run. It’d be a shame for Venditti to have to rush to a conclusion that prematurely ends this conflict. The way he’s set things up leads it open for more Freedom Fighters to join the cause and more surprising members of the Nazi forces.

Eddy Barrows is up to the challenge of drawing some nightmarish takes on Plastic Man’s abilities perverted by the Nazis. Barrows does his best work capturing the fire in the black factory workers as they realize they have a chance to strike back against their hated Nazi supervisors. Adriano Lucas’ colors also capture this sense of rising hope in advance of the big battle and some strong power effects of Human Bomb’s abilities.

Freedom Fighters is one of DC’s most entertaining titles and is overflowing with potential that should extend beyond three more issues.
