DC Comics reviews 9/25/19 – Batman/Superman #2, Detective Comics #1012

Shazam #7

Shazam had fast spiraled into Doomsday Clock territory. It’s a very enjoyable read, but there’s that certain apprehension over when the next issue will arrive in stores. For Doomsday Clock, writer Geoff Johns had the challenge of writing a meta commentary of the DC Universe and meld it with the narrative style of Watchmen. That’s a huge undertaking and to some extent the delays are understandable in order to get it right.

With Shazam, Johns doesn’t get the same grace as the book isn’t nearly that complicated. The delays have completely derailed the momentum and fun of the Wonderlands story arc. Issue 1 came out back in December. It’s not too much to ask that the book follow a monthly schedule or if Johns can’t keep the regular schedule for another writer to get assigned the book. As for the issue itself, it’s another tremendously fun and seemingly too brief look at the Shazam family as they travel through the Wildlands and Wozenderlands.

Tawky Tawny gets a big spotlight this issue and it’s such a blast seeing Johns lay more foundational elements to this run with the Dr. Sivana and Mr. Mind subplot and the pending arrival of Captain Marvel? Dale Eaglesham handles the bulk of the art with an assist from Scott Kolins in the back half of the issue. The art is spectacular as Eaglesham shows such terrific command of his characters’ movements and Kolins fits the fun style of the book nicely.

Shazam is always a quality read, but the real question is how long the wait will be for next installment.
