DC Comics reviews 9/25/19 – Batman/Superman #2, Detective Comics #1012

The Flash #79

Joshua Williamson is a few more months away from being the lone DC writer working on the same title since the start of the Rebirth era. When you factor in The Flash is one of the few titles to come out every other week Williamson’s run is even more impressive.

The biggest accomplishment for Williamson though is he’s still creating immensely satisfying arcs like this current Death and the Speed Force.
Each issue Williamson adds new wrinkles to the story like how Psych’s death led to renewed power for Speed Force users including one Barry Allen didn’t want to see again.

Williamson also completes the reunion of the main Rogues with the return of Golden Glider. These new Rogue costume designs are way too busy and complicated for no reason, but I’m excited to see their rematch with The Flash. Williamson has paced these confrontations smartly so it hasn’t become overdone.

And a main supporting cast member returns with news of a link toward Flash Forward #1. That’s a lot of subplots vying for time but Williamson makes it look easy.
Ditto for the always strong art from Rafa Sandoval who draws a broader Flash than recent artists, but it works just fine in the context of his storytelling. Arif Piranto’s colors aren’t overly vibrant but pack a huge visual punch.

The Flash is comic book comfort food. You can pick it up each issue knowing Williamson is going to deliver the goods and the art treat will always hold up their end with dynamic pages. This arc is finding Williamson especially inspired and how it plays out could have a massive repercussion on the Flash Family.
