The Terrifics #20

The Terrifics take on Bizarro’s squad of Terribles in a fun issue that rekindles some of the unpredictable charming nature of the book that had been missing for a few months.

Writer Gene Luen Yang isn’t always capable of navigating Bizarro-speak or avoiding making the dialogue occasionally frustrating to read. The trick with Bizarro stories is to limit his speaking roles, but with a team of characters from Htrae, that’s a lot harder.

In the best gag of the issue, Bizarro’s actions send the team on a trip through time. The creative team has a lot of fun playing around with the group’s visuals and their nostalgic encounters with the various time periods.

Regular artist Stephen Segovia teams with Brent Peeples for this issue. Segovia’s work is solid as usual even if it’s surprising he wasn’t able to complete the full issue. Peeples’ art matches up fairly closely with Segovia’s style, but in some cases the pages look unfinished with blank faces for characters in the foreground.

The Terrifics is back on track with a fun issue. Hopefully the creative team can keep it on track as it’s been one of DC’s more enjoyable team books over the last couple of years.
