DC Comics reviews 10/9/19 – Detective Comics #1013, Event Leviathan #5

Hawkman #17

hawkman #17

Hawkman has been one of the few titles that actually played out a Year of the Villain tie-in. With a souped up Shadow Thief stealing shadows writer Robert Venditti has a clever idea how to use Lex Luthor’s gift.

Hawkman is losing control of his bloodlust, which doesn’t bode well for Hawkman, his shadow or Shadow Thief. Meanwhile Shade tries his best to keep his friend from making a fatal decision.

Pat Oliffe is looking far more comfortable handling the artwork these past few issues. The art enhancements are noticeable with the wider panels and more elaborate backgrounds. Oliffe has always been strong in character expression and with smoother action sequences the art is no longer a weakness on this run under his tenure.

Venditti widely didn’t drag out this tie-in especially with Hawkman linking up with another big DC storyline for the winter.
Hawkman retains a consistent level of quality as Venditti and Oliffe wrap one storyline and tease a very compelling looking next subplot.
