DC Comics reviews 10/9/19 – Detective Comics #1013, Event Leviathan #5
Superman #16
With Jon off to join the Legion of Super Heroes it’s hard to know exactly how Brian Michael Bendis will write Superman. It’s not like Superman has ever been the focus of the book whether it be Jon, Jor-El or Rogol Zaar, Superman has definitely been second place in his own book.
That doesn’t change this issue as Bendis tries his hand at a Super Sons story when Jon finally visits his best friend Robin.
It’s odd how off Bendis’ take on Damian is considering he’s writing a much stronger version in Event Leviathan. This issue Bendis writes Damian like a typical comedy character from Young Justice. It’s so weird hearing Bendis’ teen speak through Damian.
Jon is saying his farewells as he prepares to leave for the 31st Century. I’d missed the Super Sons dynamic so even with Bendis’ inconsistent take, it was fun seeing them together again. Superman makes a cameo to say goodbye and the main character of Bendis’ Superman title is off the book.
David LaFuente’s art is terrifically suited for this lighter issue. He’d make a good fill-in artist for Young Justice thanks to his cheery and animated style.
Superman finally has a wide open direction now and it’ll be interesting to see what Bendis will do now. Despite the character portrayals this is a decent epilogue of the Super Sons saga.
