Image Comics reviews 10/16/19 – The Marked #1, Gideon Falls #17

The Marked #1

The Marked is an intriguing new series that teases this broad, expansive world centered around glyphs and art without revealing much at all. Co-writers David Hine and Brian Haberlin, who also handles the art, manage the tricky act of showing just enough with The Marked while still leaving a great deal unknown about the nature of the title. Is it a magic book with super power elements? A more thought-provoking look at expression or just an ideal showcase for Haberlin’s gorgeous art? I like not being able to slap a label on the title yet.

What is clear is Liza, a skilled young member of The Marked, is bored with the standard status quo and creates a new form of Hybrid Sorcery with unexpected consequences. This one act of defiance could spell trouble for The Marked and usher in a new era of danger and chaos.

Haberlin’s artwork paired with incredible color work from Geirrod Van Dyke is amazing. I think the art alone is going to bring in a lot of readers as it’s special and stands out among most books on the stands.

At 48 pages priced the same as a standard issue, this is a can’t lose introduction to The Marked. Essentially giving away the second issue for free doesn’t even seem like a risky proposition as it’s going to be hard for readers to not want to see what happens next issue. This was a strong debut from a book that shows a lot of promise and looks to be another winner for Image.
