The Flash #81

Bryan Singer clearly adored Richard Donner’s Superman films as evidence by Superman Returns being a nearly step by step homage to Donner’s work. The respect and admiration was there, but Singer failed to advance the movies to another level. Compare that to Joshua Williamson’s run on The Flash. It’s obvious Williamson is a big fan of Geoff Johns’ tenure writing the character. So many of Williamson’s stories reflect the development of characters under Johns’ watch, but what’s different is Williamson uses his inspiration as a launch pad for some many clever and creative takes on The Flash universe.

This issue marks the end of the Death of the Speed Force arc as Barry clashes with Hunter Zolomon and The Black Flash. Williamson takes what Johns established and takes it to the next logical step. It’s a really fitting conclusion to this arc and is very respectful of a character that meant so much in both Johns and Williamson’s runs.

Scott Kolins’ art is another ideal fit for this issue as he was the artist who handled most of the more memorable Zolomon stories both pre- and post-Flashpoint. Kolins brings a real in your face approach to his characters’ movements that doesn’t always work for other books, but is perfect for The Flash. Luis Guerrero’s colors are always magnificent as The Flash is one of the most vibrant titles DC puts out.

This was a very strong conclusion to this arc and with The Rogue on deck next Williamson doesn’t seem close to running out of ideas and exciting stories for this title.
